Rich Price and Sue Longo are planning this tour of scenic Dunderberg Mountain, from which there are many great views. There is also the remains of the Dunderberg Scenic Railway, a cablecar tour that was to begin at the parking lot where we are meeting; from there the cablecar was pulled up the maountain to the location of a proposed hotel, and from there the cablecar would descend the mountain by gravity along a winding rai path down the mountain to the start point. The company building it went bankrupt several months after construction began in 1890. It is surprising how much they finished, including a partially built tunnel. Sue and Rich are looking to explore some of the railway, so the route we will hike has not yet been finalized.
From the South, take the P.I.P. to Exit 15; at the end of the ramp turn left and take Rt. 106 East to Rt. 9w North in Stony Point. Go North several miles until you are alongside the Hudson River. Just before the road starts up Dunderberg Mountain, there is a fork. Just to you left you will see a parking area, this is where we will meet.
